For decades, Juneteenth was the best kept secret south of the Mason Dixon Line. Only a small number of people knew about the holiday and most of them were from the South. Now that Juneteenth has been declared a Federal holiday, most Americans know that Juneteenth marks the day, June 19,1865, when Union troops marched into Galveston and enforced the order to free all 250,000 enslaved Blacks. Presenter Gloria Van Hof, who grew up in the South and is the great-great granddaughter of slaves, will tell the back story of Juneteenth—the two Fugitive Slave Acts, the Underground Railroad, the conductors, the secret routes and safe houses and the freedom seekers who traveled through Illinois and neighboring states. Join us to learn how the true story of Juneteenth became an American story and an international celebration. Sponsored by the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Our goal of world community embraces peace, liberty and justice for all.
