“One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn’t require religion at all.”
― Arthur C. Clarke
Over the course of human existence, many have debated questions of morality, offering biological, philosophical, and religious bases for their perspectives. Charles Darwin argued that our “capacity for ethics is a necessary attribute of human nature, whereas moral codes are products of cultural evolution.” Many philosophers have likewise argued that morality is not biological determined but instead derives from cultural traditions or religious beliefs.
Where do the foundations of morality derive.
Does Morality depend upon a belief in a deity?
Does Morality depend upon religion?
Are religious ethics and secular ethics similar or essentially different?
What foundation other than religion is possible for moral codes?
Do non-religious (secular) ethics actually work as a foundation for morality?
Grab a cup of your family beverage and join us for a lively discussion on these and tangential topics at this week’s Coffee With Questions Discussion Group at: Coffee With Questions Zoom Link
