Happiness Gardening

For some, the word virtue sounds a little too much like Protestant Puritanism – dour and strict. Rather, let’s consider a virtue as something more like a personal asset, a state of mind, an outlook and attitude where practicing a virtue is a special sort of ‘power’ enabling us to experience a deeper level of well-being, that is, happiness. Since we aren’t born with or without virtues we can freely choose and consciously cultivate them rationally and systematically. We learn how to be virtuous. We practice being virtuous until that practice becomes a habit. We cultivate the virtues and in this intentional activity of cultivation of particular qualities, attitudes and outlooks leads to happiness. What are these virtues? How do we practice and cultivate them for our happiness? Join us Sunday, March 23 for a fun and interesting look into the virtuous practices that cultivate happiness.

The Rev. Dr. Alan Shear is a retired college professor currently serving on the Tree of Life Worship Arts team. He has taught courses in philosophy, religion, ethics and history. He currently practices being virtuous with his friends and family.
