The Neighbor Question

One of the most profound and influential questions in our civilization has been to ask, “Who is my neighbor?” Each of the monotheisms asks this question and how it is answered has defined our shared history for millennia. From Aristotle’s philosophy to Jesus’ Parable of the Good Samaritan, ‘The Neighbor Question’ continues to impact everything from polity and ethics. Join Jim Gould on Sunday, March 22 to explore the parable’s backstory, why Jesus told it, and how it still challenges us today to live our values.

James Gould taught in the Department of Philosophy at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois, from 1988 to 2022. Born in Africa where his parents were missionaries working in religious education and leprosy healthcare; at age 17 he returned to his parents’ home country of Canada and later earned graduate degrees in both Philosophy and Theology. Today, Jim serves on the ethics committees for a hospital system and on the board of a disability services organization in Illinois.
